National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has empowered communities in Mwanza District to monitor public services.

Speaking on Saturday during a meeting between communities and duty-bearers, Mwanza Nice civic education officer Wallace Kudzala said they wanted to give people an opportunity to hold duty-bearers to account.

“People should present their issues to duty-bearers to improve service delivery in public institutions,” he said.

During the meeting, one of the community members Grevison Chiudzu claimed that some health workers in the district’s facilities are rude and report to work late.

“This attitude discourages people from seeking healthcare services,” he said.

Another community member, Fulose Olomoni, asked duty-bearers to improve service delivery in public institutions.

In his response, Mwanza District Council senior maintenance supervisor Grestone Chavinda, who represented the District Health Office, said they will investigate the allegations concerning the conduct of the healthcare workers.

“I cannot refute the allegations because they are coming from community members who seek the services. But we will find out more,” he said.

Chavinda encouraged people to report such issues to relevant authorities.

In his remarks, Mwanza Central legislator Nicholas Dausi of Democratic Progressive Party also asked people to report such healthcare workers to relevant authorities.

The meeting was funded by the European Union.
